Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant (1st Lieutenant)
Citation:
"Lieut. Koenig was parachuted to the field on 24 Feb 1944 and as wireless operator carried a great quantity of traffic for three Military Delegates to French Resistance, for two operations officers, and for an interallied mission. This W/T traffic was admirably organised and handled, and Lieut. Koenig kept a most efficient reseau working in conditions of great danger and difficulty in Lyon, Clermond Ferrand, Massiac and Mauriac at a period when arrests and shootings took place daily.

The Mission trraffic was undertaken by Koenig in June 1944 after the loss by the Mission operator of his codes and material, and after the killing of one of the Military Delegates, Lieut. Koenig narrowly escaped the Gestapo on this and other occasions.

Koenig worked in an area of intense guerilla warfare, but this traffic was never interrupted and it largely contributed to the succesful arming of the region.

It is recommended that Lieut. Koenig be appointeded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (Mil.)(Hon.)."
