Biography

Res.Sgt.Vlg.14 VB LSK

Jan was born on 8 September 1925 in Oudenbosch and lived in Breda. He volunteered for military service and was assigned to the Air Force as a sergeant pilot.

Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. After his arrival, he was stationed at Tjililitan Air Base near Batavia and provided air support for Dutch operations as a pilot. He also served as a welfare officer.

On 26 January 1949, during his last flight back to the Netherlands, Jan was killed when his Auster aircraft was shot down by revolutionary soldiers of the Siliwangi Division. Both Tjikoedan near Kalidjati and the vicinity of Tasikmalaja, both in West Java, are mentioned as places of death. Jan was 23 years old and found his final resting place at the Dutch military cemetery Menteng Pulo in Jakarta.
