Biography

Conscript soldier, Ost-Cie, 5th Battalion, Princess Irene Guard Regiment. Most likely enlisted at the Menno van Coehoorn Barracks in Arnhem and departed from Rotterdam on 26 November 1947 on the MS Kota-Inten bound for the Dutch East Indies, arriving in Padang, Sumatra, on 23 December of that year.

Reportedly, he was ambushed and killed on 2 April 1948.

Evert Smits was buried with military honours at the cemetery of honour in Padang on 3 April 1948. In 1962, he was reburied at the Leuwigajah cemetery of honour in Cimahi (Bandung).

His name appears on the Indies monument in Bronbeek Park.
