Biography

Conscript soldier, 3rd Company, 5th Battalion Princess Irene Guard Regiment. Most likely enlisted at the Menno van Coehoorn Barracks in Arnhem and departed from Rotterdam on 26 November 1947 on the MS Kota-Inten bound for the Dutch East Indies, arriving in Padang, Sumatra, on 23 December of that year.

Reportedly killed by enemy fire in the vicinity of Kampong Selajo.

Evert Smits was buried with military honours at the military cemetery in Padang on 3 July 1949. In 1962, he was reburied at the Leuwigajah military cemetery in Cimahi (Bandung).

His name appears on the War Memorial in Bunchoten.
