Biography

Conscript corporal, 5th Company, 5th Battalion, (Guard) Princess Irene Regiment* Most likely enlisted at the Menno van Coehoorn Barracks in Arnhem and departed from Rotterdam on 26 November 1947 aboard the MS. Kota-Inten from Rotterdam to the Dutch East Indies, arriving in Padang, Sumatra, on 23 December of that year**.

Killed in an accident involving an overturned carrier.

Gerrit van der Spek is buried at the Belantoeng military cemetery in Padang (Sumatra). This cemetery had to be closed in 1962 by order of the Indonesian government, and he was reburied at the Leuwigajah military cemetery in Cimahi (Bandung). His name appears on the Indies Monument on Sint Agathaplein in Delft.

* The name of the regiment was changed to Princess Irene Guard Regiment on 1 June 1948.
** The entire battalion assembled at these barracks and departed for the Indies on this date.
