Biography

Sergeant, 2nd Company, 5th Battalion, Princess Irene Guard Regiment. Departed Rotterdam on 26 November 1947 on board the MS Kota-Inten bound for the Dutch East Indies.

With the exception of the 2nd Company, the 5th Battalion GRPI was deployed on Sumatra. However, the 2nd Company, to which De Vries belonged, was deployed as reinforcement for the 5th Regiment Stoottroepen on Java and remained there throughout the conflict. Petrus Cornelis Antonius de Vries died of illness in Semarang on 12 December 1948. He is buried at the Candi Field of Honour in Semarang.

His name appears on the “Peace, Freedom, Justice” monument in his hometown of Lichtenvoorde.
