Biography

Conscript soldier, 2nd Company, 5th Battalion, Princess Irene Guard Regiment. Reported for duty at the Menno van Coehoorn Barracks in Arnhem. Departed from Rotterdam on 26 November 1947 on the MS Kota-Inten bound for the Dutch East Indies.

With the exception of the 2nd Company, the 5th Battalion GRPI was deployed on Sumatra. However, the 2nd Company, to which De Mots belonged, was deployed as reinforcement for the 5th Regiment Stoottroepen on Java and remained there throughout the conflict. Knelis de Mots was killed during a patrol on 12 December 1948.

He was initially buried at the Field of Honour in Djokja. Following a request from the Indonesian government to reduce the 22 Dutch Fields of Honour throughout the archipelago to five, all located on Java, he was reburied at the Candi Field of Honour in Semarang.

His name appears on the War Memorial in Nunspeet.
