Biography

Son of Jacobus Rietveld and Margaretha de Groot, married to IJda, Jannetje Nelly van Grol, office clerk by profession. Conscripted soldier (mobilised) in the Machine Gun Company of the 1st Battalion of the 28th Infantry Regiment.

Rubertus Rietveld was killed in action on 10 May 1940 in Dubbeldam, now Dordrecht, during fighting with German paratroopers around the Amstelwijck villa. He was given a field grave in the villa's garden on 12 May. In June 1940, his grave was transferred to the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bodegraven. In 2014, he was reburied at the Military Honour Field on the Grebbeberg.

His name appears on the monument for 28 RI in Dordrecht and the War Memorial in Bodegraven. At the Catholic Cemetery in Bodegraven, where he was buried until 2014, a plaque has been placed on the urn wall in his memory.
