Biography

Kostis Petrakis was a teacher and officer who fought on the Greek-Albanian front in 1941.

In June 1942, he joined Operation Albumen, a British-led sabotage mission targeting Heraklion Airfield. Alongside George Jellicoe and Free French commandos, Petrakis helped destroy 20 German Ju 88 bombers—one of the most successful airfield attacks during the occupation. After the raid, he and Jellicoe escaped via submarine to Egypt.

Petrakis later fought at El Alamein with Greek forces. After the war, his support for EAM and the Communist Party led to arrest by the British and later by Greek authorities. He spent a total of 17 years in prison or exile, though he eventually distanced himself from the party after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
