Admiral Spanidis attended the Naval Cadet School and was promoted to lieutenant commander in 1929. He served in several naval commands, including the "Aretousa," "Papanikolis," "Nireas," and "Katsonis." He escaped to the Middle East and commanded several ships. In June 1942, he played a role in Operation Albumen, transporting British commandos in their mission to sabotage Maleme Airport. In 1943, he was sent to the United States to retrieve the "Chios," which he used in the occupation of Italy. Later, he took command of the "Panther" and participated in the evacuation of Preveza.
He served as Greece's representative to NATO and later as commander of the Salamis naval base. He chaired the Hellenic Atomic Energy Commission and was a founding member of COMPLES. He served as Minister of the Merchant Navy in the government of Ioannis Paraskevopoulos. In 1967, he proposed the formation of a legitimate government on Crete. He publicly opposed the dictatorship, which led to his arrest and exile.
