Biography

Kimonas Zografakis fought on the Albanian front during the Greco-Italian War and later joined the resistance during the German occupation of Crete.

After the fall of Crete, his family relocated to Kastamonitsa and became active in the resistance. In June 1942, Zografakis aided British SBS commandos in sabotaging Kastelli Airfield, then escaped to Egypt and fought with the 8th Army in El Alamein and Mersa Matruh. He trained with Force 133 as a parachutist and saboteur, returning to Crete in 1943 for a second sabotage mission led by Anders Lassen.

Following the Viannos massacres, his brother Giannis was executed by the Germans. Zografakis continued covert operations under SOE command, including radio work in the Dikti mountains, sabotage at Peza, and aiding in the 1944 abduction of Gen. Kreipe. He also took part in the Drasi fuel dump attack.

In 1955, he returned British medals in protest of UK policy in Cyprus.
