Emmanouil Paterakis came from Koustogerako in the province of Selino. At the beginning of World War II, Paterakis was a gendarme. After the fall of Crete in 1941, he left for the Middle East and received training in sabotage. Meanwhile, his brothers, led by Vasilis Paterakis, established a resistance group in western Crete.
Back in Crete, Paterakis joined Patrick Leigh Fermor and George Tyrakis. Along with Stanley Moss, they formed the team that kidnapped General Kreipe. Paterakis helped transport him through the mountains to Bay X75, from where he was transported by submarine to Cairo.
After the war, he remained unemployed for a long time. Years later, when his role in the kidnapping was recognized, he got a job as a guard at the German military cemetery in Maleme.
