Biography

Son of William Watt Ritchie and Elizabeth Ann Ritchie of Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland, rank: Sergeant Flight Engineer, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

He enlisted for training as an air engineer and was stationed in Torquay, Devon, in May 1943. After graduating in August 1943, he was stationed with R.C.A.F. 427 Lion Squadron at R.A.F. Leeming.

Tragically, his aircraft, the Handley Page Halifax HX279 ZL-Z, was shot down, probably by a night fighter, during a mission to Frankfurt on 18/19 March 1944. George Arklay Ritchie and four others were killed. The remaining two crew members were taken prisoner of war.

George Ritchie is buried at Choloy War Cemetery in a communal grave (1.J.2), together with the four other crew members who died in R.C.A.F. 427 Lion Squadron's Halifax IIIB ZL-Z.
