Colin Malcolm Ogden-Smith began his military path as a cadet in the Whitgift School Contingent of the Junior Division, Officer Training Corps. He later served with the Honourable Artillery Company, Infantry Battalion, before receiving his commission into the Royal Regiment of Artillery (Territorial Army) on 26 May 1939 (Service No. 91977). Mobilized shortly thereafter on 24 August 1939, Ogden-Smith rose steadily through the ranks: War Substantive Lieutenant by 1 January 1941, Temporary Captain from 7 July 1942 until at least April 1944, and later Acting and Temporary Major in 1944.
In the latter stages of the war, Ogden-Smith was seconded to the Special Operations Executive (SOE), likely in April 1944. He was parachuted into Brittany as part of Jedburgh Team "Francis" (codename "Dorset") and served in the field from 10 to 29 July 1944. His role in this clandestine three-man team involved coordinating with French resistance units, disrupting German operations, and supporting Allied advances following the Normandy landings.
