Harries began his service in the Royal Navy in 1910 and later transitioned to the Royal Naval Air Service during World War I, where he commanded airship squadrons. With the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, Harries received a permanent commission and rose steadily through the ranks, serving in key leadership roles across the Middle East and the UK. His appointments included Head of the Intelligence Branch, Commanding Officer at RAF Ramlah and Amman, and Air Officer Commanding RAF Cranwell and No. 23 (Training) Group.
During World War II, he was Director-General of Personnel Services and was knighted KCB in 1947 following his retirement. Alongside his military achievements, Harries played first-class cricket for the Free Foresters.
