Philip Jones entered the Royal Air Force as a Flight Cadet at RAF College Cranwell in 1921, where he earned the Hyde Thompson Trophy and rose to Flight Cadet Corporal. He received his Permanent Commission in 1923 and began his career at RAF Base Calshot, later serving as a pilot in fleet reconnaissance flights and aboard HMS Argus.
Jones specialized in signals and communications, completing the Specialist Signals Course in 1930 and earning the coveted 'S' symbol. He held key signals roles at RAF Northolt, HQ Coastal Area, and in Palestine and Transjordan. His expertise led to his transfer to the Technical Branch in 1940, where he contributed to operational requirements and signals strategy during World War II.
Jones’s wartime service included postings at the Directorate of Signals, HQ RAF Middle East, and command of RAF Swanton Morley. Post-war, he served as Chief Signals Officer at HQ Transport Command, Air Officer Commanding No. 85 Group, and Senior Air Staff Officer at No. 90 (Signals) Group. His final appointment was Air Officer – Signals at HQ Middle East Air Force.
He retired on 1 April 1958 and passed away on 12 November 1979.
