After qualifying in 1931, Lewis Crooks joined the RAF Medical Branch in 1935, served in Palestine during the Arab revolt, and was posted to Iraq during the 1941 siege of Habbaniya. Post-war, he earned his MCh, taught in Edinburgh, and served in Egypt, earning the OBE.
Crooks became RAF’s senior orthopaedic consultant in 1955, revitalizing its surgical services. He was appointed CBE in 1963 and honorary consulting surgeon to the Queen in 1966. Retiring in 1970, he continued locum work in Cornwall. He died in 1992.
