Collings rose through the ranks of the British Army with a focus on logistics and transport operations. His early wartime service included key roles in North Africa, where he served as Assistant Director and later Deputy Director of Supplies & Transport for the Western Desert Force. In 1941, he was deployed to Greece with W Force, continuing his logistical leadership during critical campaigns. He later held similar positions with the 8th Army and the 9th Army, demonstrating his expertise in managing military supply chains under pressure.
From 1942 to 1943, Collings was Director of Supplies & Transport for the Persia and Iraq Command, a vital region for Allied operations. His most prominent wartime role came in 1944 when he became Director of Supplies & Transport for the 21st Army Group in Northwestern Europe, supporting the final Allied push into Germany. After the war, he continued to serve as Director of Supplies & Transport for the British Army of the Rhine and later as Inspector of the Royal Army Service Corps at the War Office.
Promoted to Major-General in 1946 (retroactively dated to 1944), Collings retired from active military service in 1948. He then contributed to international humanitarian efforts as Director of the Supplies & Transport Division of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the Near East from 1949 to 1953. He passed away in 1984.
