Biography

Alfred John Shout served in both the Second Boer War and World War I. After distinguished service in South Africa, he moved to Sydney in 1907 with his Australian wife and daughter, working as a carpenter and joining the Citizens Forces.

In 1914, Shout enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and was posted to the 1st Battalion. He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and quickly distinguished himself through acts of courage, including rescuing wounded men under fire and leading bayonet charges. For these actions, he received the Military Cross and was twice mentioned in despatches.

On 9 August 1915, during the Battle of Lone Pine, Shout led bombing attacks to reclaim trenches from Ottoman forces. In his final assault, he lit and threw grenades, but one exploded prematurely, causing fatal injuries. He died two days later aboard a hospital ship and was buried at sea.

Shout was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, making him the most decorated member of the AIF at Gallipoli.
