    Military career 1906-1930:

    - Held commissions in the Militia and Territorial Force prior to a Regular Commission in the Gloucestershire Regiment, first gazetted to the Glamorgan Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery (Militia).
    - Gazetted as Second Lieutenant on 23 February 1906, Glamorgan R.G.A. (Volunteers).
    - Appointed Second Lieutenant in the Glamorgan R.G.A. at the formation of the Territorial Force, dated 26 July 1908.
    - Promoted to Lieutenant on 6 February 1909.
    - After passing the Competitive Examinations of Officers of the Special Reserve, commissioned as Second Lieutenant into the Gloucestershire Regiment on 22 May 1909.
    - Promoted to Lieutenant on 1 November 1911.
    - Promoted to Temporary Captain on 15 November 1914.
    - Promoted to Captain (substantive) on 10 May 1915.

    "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. A strong-point held out, and the enemy succeeded in breaking our line and endangering the advance. He immediately organised two attacks on this point, which he captured, thus saving the situation and enabling the line to be straightened and advanced. Next day this point was again seized by the enemy, who were promptly ejected by another attack organised by this officer. By his promptitude and ability many lives were saved and the general situation re-established."
