Biography

Commissioned in 1925, he served in India, Palestine, and at Dunkirk before taking command of the 1st Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment in 1943.

On D-Day, 6 June 1944, he led his battalion ashore on Sword Beach, rallying his men under fire. Within hours he was killed by a sniper
