Arie van Ree grew up in a working-class family on Kraakselaan in Doesburg, along with his parents, two brothers, and four sisters. After completing his military service, Arie worked as a gardener at the Accaciahof Jewish nursing home in Dieren and also tended the garden for Mayor Nahuys. He was a sporty and sociable man, enjoyed playing football, and took great care of his carrier pigeons.
During the mobilization of August 1939, Arie was called up again. He served in the 4th section of the 8th Mortar Company, stationed on Grebbeberg. On May 10, 1940, during the German invasion, he was in the front lines of the defense. The fighting was fierce: the mortar section quickly ran out of ammunition and officers, leaving the soldiers isolated and without leadership.
On Whit Monday, May 13, 1940, Arie van Ree was killed during the German breakthrough. He was later found in a ditch near Ouwehands Zoo and reburied on Grebbeberg Hill on June 3, 1940.
Arie was the only Doesburg resident to die on Grebbeberg Hill. In 2010, a memorial plaque was unveiled on Kraakselaan in Doesburg, near his childhood home.
