12.-13.03.1944: clashes between the battle group of Bakh-Zelevsky and regular units of Soviet troops conducting reconnaissance and distracting attacks to reveal the strength of the German defense. These days, the 17th SS cavalry regiment was suddenly attacked by superior forces at its positions near the railway north-east of Kovel. At the same time, the regiment headquarters came under attack. The regiment commander, Sturmbannführer SS Jansen, and the adjutant of the regiment were seriously wounded and out of action, and the regiment’s parts were put on a chaotic flight. In this dangerous situation, the 26-year-old SS Obersturmführer Adolf Möller took the initiative in his hands. At the risk of life under enemy fire, he stopped the running soldiers and forced them to return to their positions and accept the battle. Thanks to this, the SS men managed to gain time for organizing a planned retreat, which allowed them to retreat to the new line of defense in full order.
18.03.1944: Soviet troops broke through at the village of Kolodnitsa, northeast of Kovel, in the sector of the 17th SS cavalry regiment, where were located the remains of the regiment’s headquarters led by SS-Oberturmführer Adolf Möller. Möller gathered all the available people around him, organized them and personally led a counterattack against the advancing enemy, pushing the Red Army away from Kolodnitsa, thereby preventing the capture of this point.
