Neumann’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“Neumann successfully led the defense of the village of Zajecar as its Kampfkommandant with only minor forces at his disposal (2 weak battalions, 2 Batteries, parts of a company from the Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung 1) during the period 04-08.10.1944. In this time the village garrison was encircled, and was forced to fight an enemy onslaught consisting of 2-3 Rifle Divisions and a self-propelled gun brigade. They endured drumfire from 20 enemy batteries plus self-propelled guns, as well as random air attacks. Aerial resupply was limited and ammunition in short supply. 115 large enemy attacks were defeated, and 19 enemy penetrations were cleaned up via counterattacks (with forces that even included vehicle drivers). 3 enemy SPGs that broke-in were destroyed by infantry weapons.

On the 08.10.1944 the garrison finally broke out to the west (as per orders) after all attempts to relieve it had failed. In all this Neumann was the soul of the resistance. It is only on account of his exemplary bravery that the higher leadership found the time to implement countermeasures.”

To this was added a note of approval by General der Infanterie Felber…

“This recommendation from the General-Kommando Müller and the Armee-Abteilung Serbien is well received. The defense of Zajecar was of great significance for the continued fighting in the sector of General-Kommando Müller.”
