Spörle’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“During a major enemy attack on the 16.10.1944, southeast of Preekuln, SS-Hauptsturmführer Spörle made a heroic stand in spite of powerful enemy penetrations into his deep flank.

As the enemy came to within a short distance of his command post, he personally launched a counterattack with 2 squads in order to first give himself some breathing space. Following this, he was able to clean up the deep enemy penetration while displaying outstanding personal bravery and prudent leadership.

His outstanding leadership and personal willingness to fight meant that by the evening the major enemy break-in had been eliminated, the hostile forces in the German hinterland destroyed and the frontline gap closed once again.”

To this was added a supplement by his Divisional commander…

“Spörle’s personal actions can be credited for the fact that the intended enemy breakthrough (which had the aim of seizing Libaus) was averted.”
