Biography

Dirk Cornelis van Alewijk was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on June 3rd 1916 and to Lieutenant on March 3rd 1920. His promotion to Captain followed on November 1st 1934. Het was discharged with honour on January 1st 1950 as Reserve Major with the Infantry.

Citation:
"Has awarded himself by extraordinary bravery and exeptionnal deads in battle against the enemy, by during the fightings on May 12th 1940 on the Grebbeberg, leading his Company in fiercefull and exceptionnal way, during the counterattacks near Heimerstein. After, by heavy enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire and an overwhelming attacking enemy, three times having percieved these counterattacks, having been able to reorganise some different demoralised units of other companies in the stopping line of the Grebbeberg and rearranging them to a new battleforce with which he was able to withstand renewed enemy attacks the following day. Although wounded, he stayed leading the troops until he was to exhauted to do so."
