    Biography

    Alfred Fassbender was born on January 13th 1912 in Remagen. He served during the entire war on the biggest ships of the Kriegsmarine. From January 1939 till April 1941 he was a Officer of the Watch on the Battleship Scharnhorst and in April/May 1941 he became a Flak-Artillerie-Offizier and stayed this till the end of the war. Fassbender sailed till October 1943 onboard the Scharnhorst and was transferred to the Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper in January 1944. On this ship he served until he was reassigned in April 1944 to the Battleship Tirpitz. Fassbender served onboard the Tirpitz until the Battleship was destroyed by British Lancaster bombers on November 12th 1944. After the destruction of the Tirpitz he was placed back on the Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper and he served onboard this ship till the end of the war.
