Hans Johannsen joined the Kriegsmarine in January 1935. As from October he served with the U-boat service. After his tour on board the U 96 he followed several officers courses and was appointed Leitender Ingenieur of the U 802. The ship was surrendered at Loch Eriboll on 11th May 1945. Johannsen then was held POW for three years before he was released on 7th May 1948.

1st March 1940: Obermaschinist;
1st October 1942: Leutnant (Ing) Kriegsoffizier;
