The following Wehrmachtbericht report (dated 09.11.1943) describes the action that would lead to Helmut Klassmann being decorated with the Knight’s Cross…

“A Kriegsmarine security formation under the command of Kapitänleutnant Klaßmann particularly distinguished itself during the combat against Bolshevik landing formations in the Kerch strait. In the time period 04-08.11.1943 the formation destroyed (often at close range) 3 gunboats, 2 fast attack craft, 5 landing craft loaded with soldiers and 1 tug boat. Another MTB and gunboat were both heavily damaged.”
