Awarded for his actions in assisting the German evacuation efforts in the Baltic sea during the last weeks of the war. In addition to escort duties, Temming and his crew carried soldiers and refugees along with every trip. It was Temming's ship that was the last to leave from Hela on 08.05.1945 with 1237 soldiers from Grenadier-Regiment 61 aboard. Through these efforts a great many German soldiers and civilians could be evacuated to the relative safety of the west.
