On the 14.01.1945 a critical state befell the supply troops of the I./Artillerie-Regiment 5 while they were in position in Gut Pekowo, west of the forest of “Nadl. Pultusk” (near Ostenburg). Here Soviet attack spearheads that had penetrated the German lines to the north came down on them and immediately had them fighting for their lives. Furthermore, any continued advance of the Soviets further to the south would have resulted in the encirclement of those elements of the 5. Jäger-Division that were deployed around Ostenburg. Under these circumstances Hauptmann Renschler gathered the men that were scattered about everywhere and launched a counterattack. With cries of ‘Hurrah’ on their lips, they were able to push back the Soviets that had penetrated into Gut Pekowo towards the north. For this decisive act Renschler would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
