During the middle of December 1944 the 1. Ski-Jäger-Division fought in the area of Košice, Slovakia. In this context the II./Ski-Jäger-Regiment 2 received the mission to capture the town of Somodi, SW of Košice. In light of an unclear understanding of the enemy situation the 6. Kompanie captured the town in a night attack. The battalion pushed to the area around the railway station and established a defense line along the railway embankment.

The end result was that Hauptmann Schäfer and his battalion were, by this action, able to help stabilize the collapsed Hungarian frontline and cover the right flank of the German formations defending against Soviet attacks aimed at Košice.
Awarded posthumously.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
