During the middle of December 1944 the 1. Ski-Jäger-Division fought in the area of Košice, Slovakia. In this context the II./Ski-Jäger-Regiment 2 received the mission to capture the town of Somodi, SW of Košice. Due to an unclear understanding of the enemy situation, the 6. Kompanie decided to capture the town in a night attack. This was a success, and afterwards the Bataillon pushed to the area around the railway station and established a defense line along the railway embankment.

The end result was that Hauptmann Schäfer and his Bataillon were, by this action, able to help stabilize the collapsed Hungarian frontline and cover the right flank of the German formations defending against Soviet attacks aimed at Košice. Schäfer would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this success.

Awarded posthumously.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
