Awarded for his actions during the defensive battle at the Venta river on the 09.10.1944. While in command of the armoured Kampfgruppe of the Division he counterattacked and smashed a group of Soviets that had broken into the German lines. In doing so he halted an attack by 2-3 Soviet divisions, and was thereby able to stabilize the southern flank of the 4. Panzer-Division.
