While in command of the armoured Kampfgruppe of the Division he counterattacked and smashed a group of Soviets that had broken into the German lines. In doing so he halted an attack by 2-3 Soviet divisions, and was thereby able to stabilize the southern flank of the 4. Panzer-Division.
