Awarded for his actions during the Sixth Battle of Courland. During the battle the Soviets managed to advance across the railroad line Doblen—Frauenburg with strong forces in the area north of Frauenburg. Here the Germans were forced to retreat to a hill position at the Viesate River. The success of this withdrawal was made possible thanks to a Kampfgruppe from the 24. Infanterie-Division that was led by Generalmajor Schultz. This Kampfgruppe held the Josta railway station for 4 days and thereby bought the Germans enough time to occupy and organize the new hill position.
