However thanks to the efforts of Oberstleutnant Sonntag, the threat posed by the break-in was removed. As a result the Soviets were unable to carry out their objective of encircling the forces of the XXXXII. Armee-Korps west of the Vistula. In recognition of this achievement, Sonntag was mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht of 11.08.1944 and was decorated with the Oakleaves.
