The award of the Knight's Cross to Oberst Vial is summarized in a divisional order (dated 21.12.1942) written by Generalmajor Graf von Schwerin...

"The Führer has awarded the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross to Oberst Alexander Vial, commander of the Infanterie-Regiment (mot) 60. Oberst Vial led the defense of the Chalchuta-Stellung on the 20.11.1942, as well as the breakout of these then encircled forces on the 21.11.1942. It is thanks to the brave, unshakeable and calmly cautious leadership of Oberst Vial that the nocturnal breakthrough of the Russians could be withstood, the lost positions retaken and the subsequent strong enemy attacks from all sides defeated.

The bold and skillfully prepared and executed breakout of the defenders at Chalchuta was his handiwork. Even in the hardest hours of this battle, Oberst Vial didn't lose his nerve. Even in the most dangerous of situations he led his Regiment to safety and brought the fighting to a positive outcome for our forces.

The whole division, along with the brave Grenadier-Regiment 60, is most pleased with the well-deserved award for the regimental command. The 16. Infanterie-Division (mot) wishes the brave commander heartfelt good luck as well as victorious, healthy homecoming!"
