In the battles around Riga in mid-1944 the Soviets succeeded in breaking through a German artillery position, but were quickly sealed off by an alarm battalion. The very next day however the Soviets smashed through these defences as well with heavy air and artillery support, with the goal of seizing the bridges over the northern Daugava river. This threatened the entire 225. Infanterie-Division. Wulff, who was commanding the regimental reserve of Grenadier-Regiment 333, immediately counterattacked. He succeeding in pushing the Soviets back to their starting positions and built a new security line at the edge of a forest, holding this against all Soviet attacks. For these actions he would be awarded the Knight's Cross.
