The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why de Boer received the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 10.05.1940 Oberstleutnant de Boer stood at the head of Kampfgruppe de Boer, the assembly of which was an achievement attributable to his personal soldierly initiative. He led an attack against a far superior enemy force during the urban combat in Dortrecht, and it succeeded despite an adverse situation and extremely unfavourable conditions. Both the energetic zeal of his formation as well as his own continual presence at the foremost line were critical factors that led to the capture of the important Dortrecht bridge. The seizure of this bridge was of massive significance for the entire operation.”
