Awarded for his achievements as a bomber/transport pilot over the course of 365 sorties. During his 108 missions in the Mediterranean, his successes included a munitions ship sunk near Bardia and another merchant vessel sunk in the Red Sea.

Later, on the Eastern front, he would be particularly successful against shipping in the Caspian Sea and Lower Volga. On the 31.10.-01.11.1942 alone he sunk a 1500 GRT steamer, a 1000 GRT tug, two small freighters and a tug with two barges.
