Awarded for his actions around Stalingrad. During the beginning of the attack on the city Schrader was able to hold an attacking Soviet force at bay with concentrated fire from his guns, and thereafter compel them to evacuate their recently won territory. In doing so he secured the preconditions for the Panzerkorps to overrun the first line of defense around the city. Later, he would also play a role in clearing the way for a different Panzerkorps to smash through the second defense line around Stalingrad.
