During the large scale Soviet attack east of Kirovograd, which commenced on the 05.01.1944 with 3 rifle divisions and hundreds of tanks, Tannert and his Fallschirmjäger Bataillon found themselves directly in the path of the advance. Tannert was able to hold onto his positions with a few men until the evening of that day until the ordered withdrawal to the town of Novo-Andreevka. This delaying action bought time for the Regiment to construct a new defensive line, which in turn held the Soviet armoured advance long enough for the city of Kirovograd to be properly evacuated.
In addition, on the 07.01.1944, a Soviet attack seized the village of Novo-Fedorovka (a village belonging to the left-wing division). Tannert assembled a counterattack force with men from his staff and Nachrichtenzug, and was able to take the town back. In doing so he eliminated a potential threat from the flank to his Regiment and by extension the whole Division.
For these actions Tannert would finally receive the Knight's Cross, an award for which he had already been previously submitted for.
