“Hauptmann der Reserve Bach did not only hold his strongpoint (which constituted a key position) with iron resolve for three days against strong English attacks, but also successfully carried out counterthrusts that were launched under his brave personal leadership. His decision to modify the divisional order to hold the Halfaya Pass under all circumstances, as well as his skillful combat leadership of German and Italian troops alike, were both crucial factors for the outcome of the major tank battle.”
