Awarded for distinguishing himself with his Bataillon during the defense of Tarnopol in early 1944. Particularly decisive was his unit’s destruction of a Soviet battlegroup that was in the process of trying to attack Tarnopol from the west by enveloping it from the south. In this engagement Balzer’s Bataillon largely destroyed two Soviet battalions from the 1130th Rifle Regiment (336th Rifle Division) in the Czarny Las forest, located 3 km from Zagrobela.
