The following press notice from the Solingen Stadtanzeiger describes why Bögel was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Leutnant Bögel, the captain of a minesweeper, had an outstanding share in the successful defense against the English Dieppe landing operation on the 19.08.1942. Over the course of a fierce engagement he succeeded in sinking a British gun MTB, setting another MTB aflame and shooting down 2 English bombers plus 2 fighters. Despite receiving hits by enemy destroyers and MTBs he continued to carry out his security duties. He mastered the situation while showing ruthlessness, personal bravery and courage. He has also been outstandingly involved in the security of convoys that have cumulatively amounted to 140000 GRT of cargo safely transported.”
