“Starting on the 23.05.1940 his Division began an opposed crossing over the Scheldt Canal near Bouchain. Despite strong enemy MG and artillery fire, Major Böhme worked his way forward to one of the canal bridges near an enemy redoubt. From here he led the attack with great bravery, ruthlessness and prudence. The redoubt fell in the late afternoon, and with this the city of Bouchain fell at the end of a 4 day battle.”
