Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Feldwebel der Reserve
Unit:
Zugführer 7. / Grenadier-Regiment 2 / 11.Infanterie-Division
Awarded on:
April 21st, 1944
The following divisional order of the day, dated 03.05.1944, describes why Born was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Born distinguished himself on the 24.02.1944 during Grenadier-Regiment 2’s attack against the island of Pirissar (in Lake Peipus), a battle which saw the 7./G.R. 2 being deployed on the left wing of the Bataillon. When the situation became critical he made the independent and bold decision to launch a frontal feint against the toughly defending enemy while he launched a flanking attack with the bulk of his Zug. The attack, one which he personally led with exemplary bravery, succeeded. It was no longer possible for the enemy to create a new defensive front opposite the rest of the attacking Bataillon on the right. They were caught in the rear and thrown back across the ice of Lake Peipus.

Feldwebel Born, an extremely brave and fearless soldier, thereby demonstrated the markings of a true leader’s personality through his tactically sound decision-making in a difficult situation. However he did not live to see himself receive this high honour. He instead died a hero’s death during the heavy fighting to clear the Western Sack southwest of Narva.”
