The following wartime excerpt describes why Bornhof was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 20.04.1942 Leutnant Bornhof had the mission of thrusting over the creek west of Ramuschewo and then seizing and holding the village centre around the church. On his own initiative, and without waiting for neighbouring units or reinforcements, he pushed through to the southern edge of Ramuschewo with his Kompanie in order to set up a defense against an enemy counterattack that was aimed at the open south flank of the Bataillon. This bold decision resulted in the crushing of the enemy counterthrust, and it furthermore brought Ramuschewo under the control of the Jäger-Regiment 38. Ramuschewo is located on the Lowat river, and its control is decisive for maintaining contact with the II. Armee-Korps.”
