Awarded for his actions during the fighting around Memel in October 1944. Hauptmann Brandes formed a Kampfgruppe consisting of the operational Panzers of the Division and a Kompanie of armoured Pioniere. When the Soviets launched a major break-in attempt, Hauptmann Brandes and his Kampfgruppe managed to successfully repulse the attack and eliminate the hostile attacking spearheads.
