Awarded for having a decisive role in capturing the Beresina crossings in an intact state on the 01.07.1941. He was among the first soldiers to storm onto the road bridge, disabling the explosive charges on the bridge as he did so. In doing so he made a major contribution towards ensuring the continued forward advance of his Division. He would be badly wounded on the following day while advancing to the second bridge.
