The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Dalwigk zu Lichtenfels was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Freiherr von Dalwigk commands a Stuka Gruppe belonging to Major Graf Schönborn’s Geschwader, and in this capacity he has led his group with outstanding boldness in both the Polish and Western theatres of operation. His firm and purposeful leadership has resulted in decisive successes being achieved by the Gruppe even amidst significant enemy fighter defenses. In all this time he flew at the head of his Gruppe as an example of dutifulness to his crews, and his masterful command abilities have led to his Stuka Gruppe delivering battle-deciding results on the battlefield.”

Awarded posthumously.
